Synopsis A woman's panicked decision to cover up an accidental killing spins out of control when her conscience demands she return the dead man's body to his family. Cast Crew Details Genres Director Producers Writers Cinematography Composers Popular reviews More I like it when pretty girls kill men Blood on Her Name opens with a pool of blood and a panicked breath. A dead body of a man lies at Leigh’s feet. The cuts on her face would suggest that it was self-defense, an accident. She’s a single mother to a teenage son and fears the consequences for her family and for her auto body shop, so she decides to scrub her garage floor clean and dispose of the body. Just as she’s about to dump his body into the lake, his phone rings. Leigh listens to the message left: it’s from his son. Guilt hits her like a punch in the gut, and her conscience tells her that she must bring his body back to his family, … This felt really good. Bethany Anne Lind is completely watchable. I bought her. Her character came off as a real person to me. Will Patton and Dani Wilson are also totally present and bonafide in this. The script shoots for the rural American now and mostly gets it. It does a solid job setting up a series of circumstances that trap the protagonist into making hard and poor choices. But something there at the end, some slippage of rational motivation, some slight scripting convenience to force a wrap up, took me out of it. To the film's credit, the authenticity it achieves throughout is what makes the misstep at the end feel so glaring. It could've used a clearer story… Vertical Entertainment 2. 39:1 Color Digital 15 A terrifically morbid and atmospheric thriller, intimately produced for a twisted tale of murder. Never flashy or overly centric on making up for its low-level budget. Blood On Her Name suffices in its substantial depth and weighted characters that strive this thriller forward and out of the gloomy VOD bin. 60 FULL REVIEW AT CLAPPER IS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR WRITERS. APPLY HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION Frustration abounds with a thriller that starts on a high note but then levels off and ultimately dips. The opening ten to fifteen minutes of Blood on Her Name are very good indeed. A simple set-up that immediately had me asking questions and making assumptions, with a silent and urgent performance from Bethany Anne Lind. I was urging it not to take the expected route of heading into flashbacks and it actually didn't, which was a pleasant surprise. But as the story unfurls, it slowly becomes apparent that the story isn't actually strong enough to build on its impressive opening, somehow managing to complicate a situation that doesn't even contain all that many moving parts. I do like these sorts… I don't get the appeal like I was so mf bored. Recent reviews “You’re gonna get blood on your shoes. ” A family full of fuck ups. The comparisons to Blue Ruin are apt (although Blood lacks Ruin's black comedy and violent B movie glee) and this is very good. However, I think the downer ending is unsatisfying. I'm all for downer endings but I felt like this film was building to a more optimistic (while still being open ended and tragic) conclusion. Maybe we can break these endless cycles of familial violence The downer ending in Blue Ruin was largely predetermined and unavoidable. in Blood, when [redacted] dies, it's treated like one final narrative jolt. It's a gut punch that feels sort of tacked on. Furthermore, the final confrontation hints at what could have been a slightly different (and maybe better) movie. Instead of solely focusing on Leigh and her family, the film could have alternated between her and the wife of the guy Leigh kills, until they finally collide with one another. About a single mom with a teenage son, who runs an auto shop, when she accidentally kills a man. At first she wants to dump his body, but sudden emergence of conscious makes her to hand over the body to his family. The movie was going smoothly, until its climax scene. Which was too complicated, and made the things go awry. But it may still be a good bait for the fans of neo-noir genre. A taut hillbilly noir-thriller that alternates between dark and darker. The adrenaline and tension that spike in the opening scenes level off into an interesting but in the end somewhat predictable and conclusion. The droning score reminds me of a mid-budget CSI and doesn't do the film any favors. That said, there are solid performances and enough tension to make it worthwhile, if not game changing slice of genre. This is really good and surprisingly clever! I never saw any of the twists coming, even though they feel so obvious in hindsight. Reminded me of a lot THE DEATH OF DICK LONG but played completely straight instead of for laughs. Better-than-average performances for no-budget genre fare, and it remains tense and anxiety-inducing throughout. It works as a piece as genre cinema but also on a deeper level as an examination of how bad influences coming back to haunt us is basically inevitable. Solid, taut backwoods thriller. Very reminiscent of last year’s Standoff at Sparrow Creek in that both are excellent little thrillers with gorgeous cinematography, great performances and are ultimately very bleak and very grimy. Really, really dug this one. Goes some places you don’t expect and is all the more rewarding for it. Bethany Ann Lind is terrific and I’m always over the moon for a good Will Patton performance. Posted on Monday, August 5th, 2019 by Matthew Pope ’s Blood On Her Name ranks among Americana thrillers such as Blue Ruin, I Don’t Belong In This World Anymore, Small Crimes, and other tobacco-stained justice flicks. A modest look into how one decision can change your life forever; sins paid in flesh and blood. Characters all blend into a complicated existence between sympathy and wrongdoing, as Pope holds complication over easily definable boundaries between “good” and “evil. ” In a time when online mob justice demands black-and-white rulings on human affairs, Blood On Her Name reminds us of the sprawling grey area that defines our experience. Tension strung tight enough to slice through a crowd like the opening scene in Ghost Ship. Bethany Anne Lind stars as hard-luck Leigh Tiller, left by her lawbreaking husband to run their family mechanic shop alone. Son Ryan ( Jared Ivers) lends help, a “juvenile delinquent” on parole after beating a bully blind. Already low on customers, Leigh’s life is shattered to pieces after a junkie threatens harm post-closing. In the act of self-defense, Leigh bashes the attacker with a wrench and kills him. She panics, stashes the body, and doesn’t notify badged authorities – headed by her gruff lawman father, Richard Tiller ( Will Patton). Leigh’s troubles start with a corpse, but complications arise in the form of nosy locals. Angry, vengeful types. Blood On Her Name is never as gruesome as Blue Ruin, Jeremy Saulnier’s crosshairs comparison point. Violence punctuates drama instead of sets a bloodsoaked tone. Some might consider Pope’s backwoods caper a “mumblecore mystery” built on character designs over ass-kicking, meant with favorable connotation. We care for Leigh’s predicament, but then questions arise when Leigh’s situational allowances usher in blurry logic. A woman made to fend for herself, sacrificing for family, turned a “villain” in the flimsiest of circumstances. Pope’s rumination on survival taps into helpless realities not asked for but enacted, bringing karmic weight in megatons. I *love* how answers don’t appear, left for viewers to ponder. Judgment defines Blood On Her Name, as perceptions project how actors handle their character arcs. Ryan’s record forever blemished by juvenile incarceration, as his parole officer refuses to see past a “troubled kid” stereotype no matter the reasoning (standing one’s ground). Leigh’s journey is a seesaw of good intentions and miserable decisions, left with no options – and the man she killed? His spouseless, fatherless family? Patton’s countryman gunslinger embodies a necessary catalyst in terms of corruption with callous disregard, but it’s Lind who impresses most. Characterized by a constant grimace, fighting tooth-and-nail, not a stranger to desperation. Both the victim and aggressor with such dispirited rage, stone-faced despite a fire engulfing her insides. The way Pope bloodies salt-of-the-Earth landscapes works minimalism into an efficiency. Trailer parks and empty automotive shops backdrop class warfare between equals. Folks trapped by rural boundaries, backs against the wall and paying a heavy price. Blood On Her Name is as much about a dead body as it is a busted American Dream. Pope remembers those forgotten under violent circumstances and does more than thrill through murderous designs that unravel into a tangled mess of vigilante intrigue. Experience is that of tragedy: familial, impoverished, self-anointed tragedy. It’s a feeling that reverberates through Leigh’s cold stares and raw panic, and a sharp translation of the fears many struggling citizens encounter daily. Blood On Her Name is like playing Russian Roulette with a fully loaded gun. If every chamber represents a choice to be made by Leigh, there’s a bullet waiting. As ruthless intensity goes, I think you get the gist. Matthew Pope country-fries gutter luck, sizzles up a healthy portion of stand-off tension, and serves one nasty slice of homestyle revenge. Maybe too bleak for some, but sorry. Life isn’t all rainbows and Skittles. Kudos to the filmmakers who don’t shy away from the lows we’re forced to stomach and those failed in the process. Damnation by location, never given a choice. /Film Rating: 7. 5 out of 10 Cool Posts From Around the Web:.
